ThrivingLiving Room

The Rex Begonias first started making their way into the ranks after finding them as a seasonal plant at Raemoir garden centre. The first was a interesting mix of orange and green, looking almost fluorescent. I have since added ones with dark and silver leaves.

Personal Note

Personal note on Begonia Rex

The Rex Begonia brings an almost painterly quality to the shelves, offering textures and metallic sheens that contrast completely with standard green foliage. It is a plant that teaches attentiveness; it communicates its needs quickly through crisping edges or drooping stems when ambient humidity drops or soil dries out too far. Replicating its native understory environment indoors is a satisfying test of micro-climate management. Personally, I keep them paired with my calatheas to add to the vibrant colours.

Care & Environment

Renowned for its intricate, metallic patterns and velvety leaf textures, the Rex Begonia is cultivated entirely for its foliage. Native to the damp, shaded forest floors of subtropical East Asia, it thrives in high humidity and steady, moderate moisture. Indoors, it requires a delicate balance: consistent moisture without waterlogging, and soft, diffused light to keep its vivid silver, burgundy, and spiral patterns vibrant.

  • Watering Routine

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Rex Begonias have shallow, delicate root systems and succulent-like stems that dislike both severe drought and soggy soil. Always apply water directly to the soil surface—wetting the foliage or central crown can quickly induce powdery mildew or leaf spot.

  • Soil Blend Recipe

2 parts peat-free potting compost, 1 part coco coir, 1 part perlite, and a handful of fine bark or leaf mould. Rich, sponge-like, and airy to retain moisture while allowing delicate fibrous roots to easily penetrate.

  • Light & Micro-Location Details

Thrives in gentle, diffused light. Direct sunlight easily scorches its paper-thin leaves, while deep shade causes the striking iridescent patterns to fade. An East-facing sill or a spot a few feet back from a bright window is ideal.

  • Dimensions & Potting Specs

Forms a low, spreading mound around 20cm–30cm tall and wide. Prefers shallow pots or wide pans that accommodate its shallow rhizomes without holding excessive, stagnant soil underneath.

Growth Timeline & Milestones

  1. Spring 2025

The first of the Rex Begonias finds their way into the collection.

  2. September 2026

The most recent changes to the ranks include the addition of 2 more Begonia rex's, which led me to attempt propogating these through the kitchen roll methods.
